50% have TMJ but treatment is not covered in North America
TMJ treatment needs to be included in the dental plans being developed for Canadians.
Why is this important?
50% of people world wide suffer from TMJ. Most doctors and dentists don’t recognize the symptoms. Treatment for TMJD is a medical issue that is treated by dental professionals. What works and what doesn’t is not well studied. The treatments are not covered by private or provincial insurance. People are often given inappropriate treatments that cause more harm, or they are given treatment that only partially or temporarily reduces the pain. TMJ is linked to teeth, jaw, face, neck, head and back pain. It can affect digestion and the heart. This can be very debilitating. Treatment options need to be studied and covered by health plans.
